    West Riding County FA

    Town Win Whitworth Cup.

Liam Gray Knaresborough Town (1) 3

    Spa Athletic (0) 1.

Knaresborough Town won the Whitworth Cup for the 20th time in the club’s history beating Spa Athletic 3-1.

Dave Thomas struck an unstoppable free kick from 20 yards to put Knaresborough in front. The ball struck the underside of the cross bar and bounced down behind the line. The Spa keeper pulled the ball back but an alert assistant referee was on the spot to award the goal.

Towns leading goal scorer Matt Thompson scored the other two goals to give Knaresborough a comfortable lead but Spa never gave up and did manage a consolation goal late on in the game.

Captain Liam Gray (pictured with the cup) led by example, has he as done all season, to make sure his team did not slip up.

Town’s attitude was spot on all the game and not one player showed signs of nerves. With all players playing well it was hard to call a man of the match for Town but for me it had to be Dave Thomas, who, playing as a center back, due to injuries for Matt Duerden and Rob Ellerker showed great composure on the ball and a determination to win.

    More later.
