    First Team News.

Page updated Saturday, March 29, 2008

Club manager Brian Davey It was another good week for the club with two more wins last Saturday. The first team beat a much improved Rothwell side
    3 – 2, and the reserves beat Ossett 2 – 1.

The game against Rothwell was played in really windy conditions, which made it very difficult for both teams. We settled down better however and created a few good chances, going in 1 - 0 up at half-time. Rothwell equalised against the run of play and, once again, the goal was a result of some poor defending. After some sustained pressure from our three forwards, including Fraser Lancaster who showed a lot of quality, we scored another 2 goals in 5 minutes and although Rothwell managed to pull one back we finished the game well worthy of the three points. Our three goals came from Liam Gray, Mark Baranovsky and Matty Thompson.

Although we are scoring plenty of goals at the moment, we are letting too many in and we need to try to keep a few clean sheets. We tend to dominate large parts of games, miss three or four chances, score one and then the opposition seize on a half chance and it’s 1 – 1 and we are under pressure. It is something that we really need to work on.

It hasn’t helped having so many injuries to key defenders. Matty Duerden and Paul Salem were just back last week after being out and Rob Ellerker is also just coming back after a terrible year with injuries. When you consider that we have missed Andy Pickles all season as well, it has been difficult for us with all four centre backs having been out with injury at some time.

Today’s game against Ripon should be tight. They are a good young side, managed by my old mate Charlie Brown, and although we beat them 3 – 0 at Ripon earlier in the year they are likely to cause us problems with their good passing game. They are also coming to us off a good 2 – 1 win against Boroughbridge last week, so it won’t be easy.

I must say well done again to Mark and Andy. The reserves are starting to pick points up but face a hard game at Beeston today. So let’s hope they can pick up another good win.
